Help avoid tantrums by using effective commands. They make sure your child knows what to do and that you are calm.

Purpose:

Effective commands can help your child avoid getting so upset in some cases because they know what you want. It is not helpful to give commands when your child is already upset and having trouble calming down. Other strategies, like calming, modeling, and when-then statements, usually work better for screaming and tantrums. If you give a command, you should be ready to follow through with consistent consequences.
Remember that effective commands are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
