It is hard to learn how to stay calm when you're upset. Combine your praise for staying calm with a when-then statement. This will help your child feel confident and know why staying calm is helpful.
In the middle of a tantrum, children cannot have conversations. In this situation, you might say, "When you are ready, I'm here to talk" or "When your body is calm, then we can go back to playing." Make sure to use strategic attention and model your calming strategies after making that statement.
Remember that when-then & if-then statements are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
