Using when-then & if-then statements for
Recognize the behavior:
Throws a ball at a child on the playground.
Identify what you want to see:
Playing nicely with other kids.
Use the Skill:
Before arriving, let your child know what they should do. For example, “When you are kind to other kids, they will want to play with you and we can stay longer.”

Purpose:

When-then & if-then statements show children what will happen when they make certain choices. Set your child up for success by telling them what behavior your expect and what will happen when they do that. You also might need to explain the negative consequence of picking fights. In the example of throwing a ball, you could say, "If you throw something at or hurt another child, we will leave the playground."
Remember that when-then & if-then statements are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
