Using when-then & if-then statements for
Recognize the behavior:
Repeatedly calls your name and pulls on your arm while you are talking to an adult.
Identify what you want to see:
Staying quiet while you finish talking.
Use the Skill:
Before the conversation, say something like, “I will not answer you while I’m talking. If you touch my arm, I will know you have something to tell me when I’m done.”

Purpose:

When-then & if-then statements show children what will happen when they make certain choices. Notice when your child usually interrupts you. Use if-thens to set up what you want your child to do before those situations. If you forget to set up the expectations, use when-thens to respond to an interruption. For example, "When I'm finished speaking, then I will answer you." Remember to follow up with strategic attention.
Remember that when-then & if-then statements are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
