Recognize the behavior:
Refuses to leave a friend’s house when it’s time to go home.
Identify what you want to see:
Saying goodbye and leaving the house.
Use the Skill:
Try to set up a rule before going to the friend’s house. For example, “The rule for your friend’s house is that you need to leave calmly when I say it is time to go. If you follow the rule, you can have 20 minutes of screen time when we get home. If you break the rule, you will not get screen time.”
-
Purpose:
-
Make clear, positively stated rules for behaviors and clear positive consequences for following the rules. This helps children know how and want to obey. Follow through on clear negative consequences for breaking rules. This teaches children that defiance is not worth it.
Remember that rules are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
