Recognize the behavior:
Throwing a loud tantrum.
Identify what you want to see:
using strategies to calm down when upset.
Use the Skill:
After the tantrum is over, praise them. For example, “I’m glad to see you calm again.”
In the future, praise whenever your child uses a calming strategy. For example, “That was really great when you took a deep breath to feel better.”
-
Purpose:
-
It’s hard to praise when your child is in the middle of a negative behavior. Instead, make sure to praise the specific behavior you want whenever you notice it. Praise what you want your child TO DO rather than what you want them to stop doing.
Remember that praise is most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
