Recognize the behavior:
Refuses to leave a friend’s house when it’s time to go home.
Identify what you want to see:
Saying goodbye and leaving the house
Use the Skill:
Even if it takes a while, praise as you leave. For example, “Great job saying goodbye to our friends!” Make your praise enthusiastic if your child gets ready to leave quickly.
-
Purpose:
-
It’s hard to praise when your child is in the middle of a negative behavior. Instead, make sure to praise the specific behavior you want whenever you notice it. Praise what you want your child TO DO rather than what you want them to stop doing.
Remember that praise is most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
