Using effective commands for
Recognize the behavior:
Throws a ball at a child on the playground.
Identify what you want to see:
Playing nicely with other kids.
Use the Skill:
If your child starts to get upset, you might use a command like, “Please take a break to calm down.” or “Please keep your hands to yourself.”

Rules for how to behave in certain places, like the playground, are often more helpful than commands for these concerns. Effective commands can help you intervene in the moment. But, only use commands if your child has the physical and emotional ability to do what you want them to do. If you give a command, you should be ready to follow through with consistent consequences.
Remember that effective commands are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
