Recognize the behavior:
Throwing a loud tantrum.
Identify what you want to see:
Using strategies to calm down when upset.
Use the Skill:
Your child might tantrum at bedtime. You give choices like, “It’s bedtime. Would you like to walk or be carried to your room?”
-
Purpose:
-
Choices can help you avoid tantrums. Think about times of day or situations that usually result in tantrums. Use choices to give your child a sense of control in those situations.
In the middle of a tantrum, any attention, including choices, could make the tantrum worse. Your child doesn't have the mental ability to think through choices when they are in the middle of a tantrum.
Remember that choices are most helpful when you also use the other PC-CARE skills.
